Migrate to coastal estuaries in Autumn from river beds and farmlands. They nest in stony river beds, Food consists of small fish, earthworms and insects. 30cm.

Common throughout New Zealand they are friendly birds, often entering houses to catch insects. A black form is often seen in the South Island. Entirely insectivorous, most food caught in the air. 16cm.

Mainly found in forested high country. Fast flighers, food consists of large insects, small birds, lizards and rodents. Nesting on ground under fallen logs or overhanging rocks they defend nests fearlessly. 45cm

Of nocturnal habit and our only remaining endemic owl, they mainly inhabit forest but have adapted to clumps of trees in open country. Main food is insects and sometimes small birds, mice and lizards. 29cm.

Inhabit sand dunes and rocky terrain. They can often be seen feeding for sand hoppers, insects, larvae and spiders amongst tide line debris.
Similar in appearance to the skylark but does not soar. 19 cm.

Inhabit forests and gardens through New Zealand often flying long distances to feed on seasonal flowers such as kowai and Pohutakawa.

Self introduced from Australia and now common in New Zealand. Inhabit sheltered coastlines, estuaries and lakes. Flimsy nests of sticks are usually in large pine or macrocarpa trees. Grows to 43 cm.
Pigeon

NZ.'S only endemic pigeon they are widespread around forested areas. Food consists of a wide range of berries, seed, flowers and fruits of native and exotic plants. An important podocarp seed spreader. 51cm.
